Third best time in the special stage, third place in the overall standings: it really was a great day for the Trophy Truck Chevrolet of Eric Vigouroux and Alexandre Winocq.
« It was important to get it right in this 459 km special stage. We concentrated on not making any navigation mistakes and going at a fast rhythm but not completely flat out. It was the right decision.» explained Eric Vigouroux.
« We just had a minor worry with our inflation/deflation system, which is built into the wheel hubs and wasn't completely airtight. We disconnected it at the start of the special stage. Then, just after CP 2, we stopped to connect it again. Unfortunately the sand at this spot was soft and the ground gave in beneath our wheels. We lost a few minutes getting the sand ladders and spades out, but it wasn't anything serious. »
Eric's strategy was to be as consistent as possible and not to stick to performance alone.
For the time being, this is an excellent tactic, because the Trophy Truck is in third place, eight minutes behind the leader, the Argentinean Terranova in a BMW X3 CC.
« Since the start, each stage has gone to different drivers and different cars. Today, the going suited the ultra-fast Schlesser buggies, and it was Dominique Housieaux who won, by the way. But the main thing is to note is that the Trophy Truck is consistently in the first three, with real homogeneity on all types of ground. » said Eric Vigouroux.
The fifth stage, held on Tuesday 29th April, will mark the halfway point of the competition. 359 km long, the day's special stage, which is the first to be held entirely on sand, will be a key point of the rally...
