Former Alpine skier turned race driver Luc Alphand suffered injuries whist competing at the weekend in the Rand'Auverge moto endurance event in France.

Alphand, 43, suffered spinal injuries and was operated on today in Clermond-Ferrand. His injuries are said to include three fractures to the spine.

Christian Lavieille described the crash, in which Alphand is said to have gone over the handlebars of the KTM, as a near catastrophe and that he is wishing his friend a speedy recovery.

The Frenchman retired from completive skiing in 1997 and has since competed in the Le Mans Series as well as the FIA GT championship. His most recent success came at Dakar in 2006 where he won the classic event and this year he competed with Corvette at Le Mans.
